Consumers v OFT Donation Call on Hold

Following an agreement with the OFT, CAMRA has suspended its call for donations to fund its legal appeal against the OFT's initial rejection of CAMRA's pub market super-complaint.

CAMRA is delighted that the OFT has agreed to reopen consideration of its super-complaint before making a final decision. Persuading the OFT to commit to making a new decision is a magnificent achievement that was only possible as a result of the generosity of CAMRA members who have donated over £8,000 in a month. The funds will be put towards CAMRA's legal fees.

CAMRA's super-complaint argued that a lack of competition in the pub market is costing consumers £2.5 billion every year and asked the OFT to act against the large pub owning companies in order to restore proper competition.

"I am delighted that CAMRA have appealed the deeply flawed decision by the OFT not to investigate the current operation of the beer tie by some companies and the way that is clearly harming trade and closing pubs.

CAMRA has show great leadership and courage on this issue and I hope CAMRA members and all supporters of the British pub will rally round and give generously to the legal fund. I will be making a donation and will be asking other members of the Save the Pub group to consider doing the same"

Greg Mulholland MP, Leeds North West & Chair of the All Party Parliamentary 'Save The Pub' Group

"The OFT response was as inadequate as CAMRA's super-complaint was compelling. The OFT has not seriously considered whether there is fair competition at a local level which ensures that consumers, or pub landlords for that matter, get the best deal. This is a critical shortcoming in the OFT's response to CAMRA."
